The Guardian, Saturday 10 April 2010 David Cameron will today unveil his long-awaited proposals to recognise marriage in the tax system, when he announces plans that will benefit lower- and middle-income couples to the tune of £150 a year. In a move designed to burnish his family-friendly credentials, the Tory leader will pledge to introduce a partially transferable personal allowance that will benefit all married couples and those in civil partnerships earning up to £44,000. The plan, to be funded by a levy on banks, will cost around £550m, according to estimates by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
